The Role 


You will have the opportunity to be a thought and development leader on a high-performing team essential to creation of new policies for the Life business unit at Lincoln Financial. The knowledge and skills you have attained and cultivated throughout your career will be impactful to working with the Architects, Business Systems Analysts, and other developers on the team to both modify existing systems as well as develop new, innovative solutions to differentiate Lincoln from other peer in the Life Insurance industry.  


Development skills with Java/JEE web application development, working with data from relational and non-relational sources, transformation of data to different formats, and exchanging data through web services serve as a great foundation for your success with the New Business applications.  




  • Work with a diverse group of technical professionals with backgrounds between 3 and 30+ years in the IT and Life/Annuity Insurance  
  • Learn and help modernize existing applications. Assess current state, provide feedback, and help deliver solutions 
  • Be a key player in delivering new applications and features to help the Life business unit achieve aggressive sales and “digitization” goals (i.e. increase throughput, improve customer experience, etc.) 
  • Work across team lines with business teams and infrastructure (Database, App Server Administration, etc.) – Leverage your communication, relationship, influence, and negotiating skills with both technical and non-technical audiences  
  • Use your superior critical thinking skills to help resolve situations that occur in your project team, with production applications, etc. 
  • Be a partner with management in road mapping the future of the Life New Business applications and systems 
  • Partner with management to grow your career at Lincoln including your continuing education and leveraging that knowledge to benefit both you and the company 
  • Be a mentor and coach to junior developers 
  • Demonstrate your excellent time management and planning abilities to deliver on time and at/under budget 




4 Year/Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience (4 years of experience in lieu of Bachelor's in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, Information Systems, Information Technology or Computer Engineering or equivalent work experience (Minimum Required) 




  • 5+ Years of experience in application development and team leadership directly aligned to the specific responsibilities for this position. To be successful, your current role must focus on developing web applications using Java/JEE technologies and related frameworks with 50% or greater of your time dedicated to hands-on coding and remaining time dedicated to team leadership and other responsibilities. (Required) 
  • Web Services (required – experience with both REST and SOAP desired) 
  • XML (required) 
  • While not required, experience with one or more of the following are considered advantageous to your consideration for the position:  
    • Transformation of XML using XSLT stylesheets 
    • Use of Java frameworks such as Spring and ORM frameworks such as Hibernate in business-critical system(s) 
    • Knowledge of Life & Annuity insurance systems - highly desired  
    • ACORD XML insurance industry standard formats knowledge (specific knowledge of Life Insurance formats including TX103, 1125, and 1122 is beneficial) 
    • Google Web Toolkit UI development experience 
    • Experience working with Agile teams 
    • Experience working in an environment practicing DevOps 
    • Practical, real-world use of cloud technologies (AWS, Azure) 
    • Practical, real-world use of application container technologies (Docker)
