The Role

As the AVP, Associate Chief Underwriter – Lincoln’s Life Underwriting & New Business area, you will provide strategic leadership to set and support life underwriting policies and procedures. You will establish the underwriting philosophy in conjunction with cross-functional, customer-facing teams.  You will also underwrite the most complex and highest face amount cases and referrals and create strong and sustainable relationships with their respective underwriting teams, as well as with marketing wholesalers and producers.

    • Develops & drives life underwriting strategies that support business unit objectives and initiatives
    • Develops & contributes to strategic plans/programs and ensures alignment to enterprise & business unit goals
    • Partners with cross-functional, customer-facing team to establish underwriting philosophy
    • Evaluates, directs & executes all underwriting aspects of the largest face amount cases, including all formal and informal individual life applications greater than $25,000,000
    • Partners & serves as liaison with reinsurers on large/complex cases that require facultative underwriting
    • Builds & maintains strong collaborative relationships with internal stakeholders to develop & implement underwriting policies/procedures
    • Provides underwriting direction to team in partnership with internal stakeholders (actuaries, auditors, medical directors)
    • Directs alignment of underwriting activities to the business plan profitability strategy
    • Ensures his/her assigned area meets objectives pertaining to quality, compliance, regulations, productivity, budget and project management
    • Evaluates & reviews referrals and appeals on the most complex underwriting cases with their respective assigned team member
    • Serves as highest level subject matter expert in individual life underwriting
    • Participates in depositions and/or trials as an underwriting expert
    • Reviews contestable death claims and provides expertise to claims & legal departments
    • Represents Lincoln & presents on underwriting topics at industry meetings
    • Provides underwriting training and mentors team to achieve career & development goals
    • Acquires & shares competitive intelligence internally to institute changes & improvements to our underwriting philosophy & practices as needed
    • Identifies & analyzes atypical marketplace patterns; advises executives on innovations to maximize hidden opportunities
    • Maintains current knowledge of underwriting regulatory rules/requirements and emerging issues/trends, assesses impact & ensures new trends/developments are appropriately incorporated in current & future strategies
    • Identifies, evaluates & resolves issues by negotiating win/win solutions when business unit priorities conflict with enterprise priorities while actively supporting corporate initiatives
    • Encourages dialogue among peers to increase understanding of differing viewpoints, strengthen team cohesion & promote good decision-making
    • Directs and enhances organizational initiatives by positively influencing and supporting change management and/or departmental/enterprise initiatives



    • 4 Year Bachelor's degree or 4+ equivalent work experience (4 years of experience in lieu of Bachelor's) (Minimum Required)
    • Industry course work and professional designations in FALU, FLMI, and CLU preferred



    • 10+ Years of experience in Individual Life Underwriting directly aligned to the specific responsibilities of this role and experience in handling all aspects of highly complex & very large face amount policies (Required)
    • Educational experience and/or proficiency in all aspects of risk selection (medical, non-medical, financial)
    • Strong presentation skills with demonstrated ability to influence at all levels of management through clear, informed and logical discussions/presentations.
    • Demonstrates ability to communicate knowledgeably and credibly with senior management and internal constituents.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • Ability to think critically, analyze information and to evaluate the implications of a course of action or solution.
    • Demonstrated strong relationship management skills with internal clients (e.g. senior management, peers and colleagues); proven ability to develop creative and collaborative approaches.
    • Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills with a collaborative style.
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
    • Successfully completes regulatory and job training requirements.
