General Purpose of Job

This position will perform and deliver on routine and progressively more non-routine assignments for long-term disability (LTD) claims independently in accordance with established procedures / guidelines. They will process complex claims ensuring the fair, ethical, and timely processing of LTD claims. In addition, they will enable less experienced team members to perform their assignments.

Duties and Responsibilities

Supports and promotes change management and/or departmental/enterprise initiatives within assigned area(s) of responsibility.
Independently reviews and interprets complex policy provisions to assess eligibility and render claims decisions based on contractual definitions. Processes complex LTD claims, seeking appropriate resources as needed.
Makes routine and progressively more non-routine decisions independently, in accordance with established procedures and guidelines.
Works independently delivering on routine but progressively more non-routine work, in accordance with established procedures and guidelines in a timely manner and meets deadlines appropriately.
Meets or exceeds departmental quality and service standards.
Works overtime as needed.
Acts as the first point of contact for escalated issues coming in to their work group to provide resolution. Escalates issue to their manager when needed.
Shares a diverse range of knowledge and information and/or enables less experienced team members to perform their assignments.
Provides responses and a diverse range of claims information to team members' non-routine questions without supervision.
Performs a diverse range of tasks/transactions related to common programs and services by directly applying expanded knowledge obtained from the role in increasingly more complex situations.
Reviews complex medical records/information and effectively leverages a variety of internal/external tools & resources to understand medical terminology, duration, functionality, documentation, organization, and overall claims workflow.
Obtains complex information needed (e.g. financial and medical records, etc.) to make claim determinations and accurately calculate complex benefits, seeks second-level review as needed
Conducts initial and ongoing claimant interviews and appropriately updates claim file/documentation.
Identifies benefit discrepancies and completes complex adjustments as needed.
Follows processes for consistent case management, including creation and maintenance of action plans that outline timing of follow-up activities and key decisions to effectively administer policy provisions.
Independently identifies and applies special handling provisions.
Focuses claim activities on managing claim duration and mitigating risk & financial liability as per contractual provisions, while ensuring compliance with applicable regulations & company policies.
Ensures the accuracy and completeness of submitted claims.
Provides customer service to internal and/or external stakeholders, recognizes what needs to be done to meet customer needs and demonstrates flexibility and responsiveness to meet customer needs independently.
Recognizes complex issues/concerns for assigned area(s) of responsibility, explains effect on the customer's service experience, and suggests process improvements.

High School or GED - Minimum Required



3 - 5+ Years of claims experience directly aligned to the specific responsibilities for this role OR for candidates with an Associate degree or above, 0-1 year of claims experience directly aligned to the specific responsibilities for this role. (Required )
