The Role

The AVP, Senior Counsel,  Legal Operations and Risk Management  leads the Compliance team that responds to Life, Annuities and Retirement Plan Services customer complaints, and provides leadership, advice and counsel to the Producer Solutions, Life Operations and Individual Annuity business operations teams.

Responsibilities

  • Leads 10+ person team that reviews, analyzes and responds to customer complaints relating to Lincoln’s Life, Annuities and Retirement Plan Services businesses.
  • Analyzes legal risk relating to complaints, engages with business operations, and makes recommendations to settle or resolve matters arising from customer complaints.
  • Responsible for maintaining policies, procedures and processes designed to ensure that customer complaints are responded to, and records kept, in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Represents Lincoln in connection with examinations by state insurance regulators relating to customer complaints.
  • Leads efforts to identify technology and process improvements designed to improve efficiency and reduce litigation and regulatory risk.
  • Partners closely with Legal Department and business operations colleagues, and communicates recommendations designed to reduce business, litigation and regulatory risk.
  • Communicates with Legal Department and business operations colleagues regarding trends in complaints and implications for Lincoln’s business, litigation and regulatory risk.
  • Communicates with senior executives on complaints, trends and broader implications for Lincoln’s businesses.
  • Keeps informed as to relevant industry and regulatory developments, identifies emerging areas of risk, and leads efforts to address those areas at Lincoln.
  • Provides strategic legal advice and counsel, and analysis of complex business initiatives, to senior leaders of Annuities, Life and Retirement Plan Services business operations on technology, operational and customer service matters.
  • Analyzes and communicates litigation and regulatory risk arising from business operations.
  • Key team member on cross-functional initiatives to drive business improvements and efficiency, including significant technology and digital initiatives.
  • Directs and enhances organizational initiatives by positively influencing and supporting change management and/or departmental/enterprise initiatives within assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Directs/executes approved strategy decisions and contributes to strategy creation for assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Provides strategic direction to build and enhance the capability for his/her assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Protects the organization's rights in contract negotiations, settlements, and litigation while ensuring compliance with laws and regulations.
  • Directs outside counsel on various matters.
  • Comments on relevant regulatory proposals in order to advance the company’s interests.
  • Collaborates in team projects, taking leadership role where appropriate.
  • Identifies efficiencies to leverage resources to drive results economically within or under budget.

     

    Education

  • 4 Year/Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience (4 years of experience in lieu of Bachelor's) (Minimum Required)
  • Other: J.D. from an American Bar Association approved school and a member of a state Bar in good standing. (Minimum Required)

Experience         

  • 8+ Years business law experience at a law firm and/or corporate legal department focused on financial services or insurance (or other relevant experience).
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret both internal and external documents such as general media/publications, professional journals, technical procedures, governmental regulations, policies, proposals, and standard operating procedures.
  • Strong presentation skills with demonstrated ability to influence at all levels of management through clear, informed and logical discussions/presentations.
  • Demonstrates ability to communicate knowledgeably and credibly with senior management and internal constituents.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
